Quake champions heroes. The designer of the first Quake spoke about character classes in Quake Champions

home / Quarreling

Quake Champions, a new competitive shooter from id Software, was announced at E3 2016. To the cheers of the crowd, the famous studio unveiled the first cinematic trailer, showcasing the bloody battles between the game's characters.

Quake Champions is positioned as the successor to the Quake series, and more precisely, their multiplayer part. The game is a whirlwind arena shooter. Unlike its predecessors, the characters in the new game from id Software are different and have unique abilities, and the game, accordingly, belongs to the class-based FPS genre. Local heroes are called Champions, hence the name of the game. Supporters of classless shooters should not despair - classic DM, where all heroes are equal, is also announced.

The dynamics and old-school hardcore from Quake Champions are so rushing. Crazy speed, legendary rocket jumps and player skill - that's what the developers rely on. At the moment, Quake Champions is announced only for the PC platform.

First of all, Willits assured fans of the series that the new part of the series would be worthy of bearing the name Quake. Many began to doubt this after learning that Quake Champions would feature elements of modern competitive shooters that are alien to the series, such as hero classes and skills. “I want our fans to be confident that Quake Champions will retain the spirit of true multiplayer competitive gaming that players love about the series.", - he said.

The main part of the interview is devoted to one of the main innovations of the game - champions. Users will be offered a choice of four characters with different play styles that have developed over the entire existence of the series. Each of these heroes is endowed with a unique Active Ability, which determines its role in the team. “Some people play aggressively, others prefer to play mostly defensively, and so we decided to create characters that each associated with a specific playstyle.”, Willits explained.

All four characters can be seen in the first cinematic trailer. Ranger, the hero from the first part of the series, has the Dire Orb ability, which allows him to throw an orb and then instantly move into it. Quake fans will remember that this is the sphere that helps defeat the final boss in the 1996 game. The second hero, Visor from Quake 3: Arena, can see through walls. Girl Nix (Nix) - the third character - did not appear in the old games. She is distinguished by increased movement speed and the ability to make a dash, temporarily becoming invulnerable. The final champion, Scalebearer, will also be making his first appearance in the series. His ability allows him to crash into opponents at speed.

The developers promise to reveal more details about Quake Champions during the QuakeCon 2016 event, which will be held from August 4 to August 7 in Dallas.

Quake Champions is being developed for PC (Windows) and will support screen refresh rates of up to 120 fps. Although the company is positioning the game as a computer exclusive, the possibility of console versions appearing after the release on PC is not excluded. So far, Bethesda Softworks has not even announced an approximate release date for the shooter. According to Willits, the premiere will be preceded by a “very long” closed beta testing, during which the creators plan to thoroughly work out the game balance.

This page features all nine characters (champions) from the Quake Champions beta. I am sure that over time there will only be more of them. In the meantime, this amount is enough to diversify your playing style. I described the main points associated with each hero, based on my personal experience of the game.

Ranger

The Ranger is the very first champion of the game, which is also free. This is where new players begin their journey. It is quite universal: health indicators, armor and movement speed are at a good level, and the ultimate will help you quickly pick up the necessary rulez or catch up/run away. The passive ability allows you to deal 25% less damage to yourself, which is convenient for making rocket jumps and shooting at close range with the enemy.

Scalebearer

Scalebearer is a champion that can ram his opponents. This is very useful not only in meaty game modes such as Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, but also duels. After all, by speeding up you can quickly get to important rules and eat them. The hero is quite fat, and his movement speed is 300 units, which positively distinguishes him from Sorlag and Clutch. The damage in the ultimate will be greater the more Scalebearer manages to accelerate before he hits the opponent.

Visor

Visor is a champion with Russian roots, so his lines are in Russian even in the English version of the game. Using his ult, he can scan the map and see where the enemy is, including invisible heroes. Some were afraid of an imbalance, but many duels in beta showed that there were no particular problems with this, since the ult lasts a matter of seconds. In addition, experienced players already know where their opponent is. The visor can strafe jump, moreover, it does not have a speed limit, which allows it to accelerate great. Good balance of health, armor and movement speed.

Anarki

Anarki is a punk with a bunch of implants who can heal himself and have great acceleration and control his movement in the air thanks to his hoverboard. He is very mobile and hard to hit. This largely compensates for his low health and armor. For the Anarki hero, the so-called bunny hopping is actively used, when the player enters sharp turns without losing speed. You can read more about strafe jumping and a little bunny hopping on the page.

Nyx

Nyx is a fast and agile hero. Her ultimate allows her to go invisible for a short period of time and gain acceleration, which allows her to catch up with someone running away, or to run away herself. Her invisibility is countered by Visor and Clutch, who sees her if he turns on his shield (ultimate). While invisible, she cannot shoot, pick up items, or be killed. If it appears on an opponent, he will be killed immediately. Therefore, do not stand still if Nyx next to you has gone into ultimate. Nyx can also jump long distances by pushing off walls. I described many of these tricks on page c. Nyx is very mobile, but has low health and armor. She can be killed with just a couple of railguns. Although it won't be easy to get there.

Sorlag

Sorlag is a dangerous lizard that can spit acid. Her health and armor are high, but her movement speed is only 280. Therefore, the hero is not the most mobile, although she has a passive ability that allows her to increase her movement speed if Sorlag jumps in one direction. At close range, it can spit acid at the enemy, which will lead to a slow decrease in the latter’s health. She also has immunity to acid, which protects her from the ultimate of other lizards. For the hero Sorlag, the so-called bunny hopping is actively used, when the player enters sharp turns without losing speed. You can read more about strafe jumping and a little bunny hopping on the page.

Clutch

Clutch is a fat robot that, having activated its ultimate, covers itself with a shield that reflects all enemy projectiles. The shield is disabled momentarily as Clutch fires a shot. This champion has the same health, armor, and movement speed stats as Sorlag. The low movement speed is compensated by a passive that allows you to accelerate if you move in one direction. While the ult is activated, he can see the invisible Nyx. There is also a passive that reduces damage by 20% while moving or stopping.

Galena

Galena is a fallen paladin who can both maim and heal. Using his ult, he places a totem that can heal allies (and himself) and deal damage to enemies. If the enemy shoots at the totem, it will disappear. It is convenient to place it in inconspicuous places - on the landing after a jumppad or exiting a teleport. There the enemy will not have time to react to the totem and destroy it. Galena is more of a team character and not the best choice for duels. Health parameters, armor and movement speed are also very specific. The character is clearly not for beginners, as there are better options. When collecting first aid kits, Galena's ultimate cools down faster.

Slash

Slash is the queen of skates. He can move quickly, and when activating his ult, he leaves traces on the ground that explode when the button is pressed again or after a certain time has passed. The parameters of health, armor and movement speed are not the best (although they added armor from 25 to 50), but this is compensated by the ability to move around the map like crazy, a passive ability will help with this. If Slash crouches after jumping, he begins to slide along the ground. The hero is clearly not for beginners.

B.J. Blazkowicz

Tenth champion of Quake Champions. Has average, fairly balanced health, armor and speed. The active ability allows you to pick up a second weapon of the same type, thereby speeding up the release of projectiles at the enemy. Don't block this champion's path when he has two rocket launchers in his hands! The passive ability allows you to restore a little health (within a block of 25 HP, for example, after a shootout there are 27 health left and the champion does not fight for 3 seconds - health will be restored to 50) if the champion is out of combat for more than 3 seconds. In my opinion, he is a rather interesting champion who, thanks to his active ability, will allow him to emerge victorious in many skirmishes. This character is the protagonist of the Wolfenstein game series.

Only the lazy were not interested in whether the id Software studio was preparing the return of another king, this time of e-sports shooters. The developers have extremely pleased fans with the announcement of Quake Champions, which will try to restore faith in fast-paced multiplayer shooters, where characters rush around the map at jet speed, and one second means a lot. Since the announcement of Quake Champions, a lot of information has accumulated, so we present you with an updated preview.

History of the Quake series

At the moment, the Quake series has four serialized parts, a multiplayer compilation for the browser and a spin-off. Release Quake in 1996, id Software proved that it could create a successful shooter where there is no hell and demons. It's no joke, but the release of the first part of Quake forced the developers to turn away from the Doom series. In the period from 1996 to 2000, the studio did nothing other than Quake, managing to release three parts and one expansion during this time.

All three Quake games were fast-paced, hard-hitting shooters with a multiplayer focus. In the first two parts there was a story campaign, but in the third part it was completely abolished. Each part was different from each other in terms of game balance, and debate about which is better still continues to this day. One thing is for sure - Quake was the favorite shooter of eSports players before its release Counter-Strike 1.6.

In 2005 it saw the light Quake 4, from a completely different studio, Raven Software, was a completely different game. For the first time in a long time, we decided to pay attention to the story campaign. In 2007, another third-party studio released a spin-off Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, which focused on multiplayer.

However, all this, as they say, was another story, the development of which was carried out by other studios. In connection with this, id Software was forced to release a browser-based Quake Live, which borrowed the best ideas and engine Quake 3. In 2014, due to the rapid obsolescence of the NPAPI browser extension, the game was released on Steam and stripped of the “shareware” label. At the moment, Quake Live is the most modern part, allowing you to experience all the best ideas of the series.

All the details of the Quake Champions announcement

A browser game based on an engine more than ten years old is clearly not what fans of the series were expecting. That's why the public exploded when, at E3 2016, id Software officially announced Quake Champions, which would revive all the best ideas of the series using new technologies. Get ready to reminisce about how to do rocket jumps and jumping jacks. Get ready for new elements typical of the writer Howard Lovecraft, which abounded in the very first part of the series.

« A fast-paced, skill-based competitive arena-style shooter, that's the definition of all of our Quake titles that have become legends among multiplayer players. Get ready, because the series makes a triumphant return in the form of Quake Champions“- these are the words that accompany the first official video of the game. The developers do not skimp on accolades to themselves, realizing that they are completely justified.

All the main elements of the series are in place in Quake Champions: the hero’s fast movement speed, skirmishes with other people, resource control, thoughtful map architecture that gives bonuses to attentive players. The developers abandoned the use of the number 5 in the title so as not to burden players with the legacy of previous parts.

Instead, they decided to write “champions” - in the new part of the series the emphasis will be on the characters, the developers will come up with active (much of it is shown in the first gameplay video) and passive (faster movement speed, less damage from explosions, etc.) abilities.

The fact that the game has characters with their own abilities, according to the developers, corresponds to modern fashion trends. However, these characters will not differ significantly. The ability to throw a sphere and teleport to it or the ability to see through walls are designed to diversify the usual gameplay. But these are just additions to the mechanics of Quake 3: Arena, invented in the 90s, where the outcome of each skirmish depended on the player’s reflexes and his knowledge of the map.

Quake Champions vs Overwatch

Despite the fact that Quake Champions has its own hero system, the developers are steering the game away from direct confrontation with Overwatch or Team Fortress 2. The choice of hero, as noted earlier, does not completely determine the further course of the match. If in Overwatch each hero has specific weapons and abilities attached to them, then in Quake Champions heroes pick up weapons scattered around the map the old fashioned way. Therefore, knowledge of a specific card will decide a lot. If the player knows where the best weapon is and how many seconds after picking it up again, then he will be able to competently apply this knowledge on the battlefield.

At the same time, not very many abilities are planned, which allows the developers to focus on their balance. The system reminds everyone of the well-known game of “cards, paper, scissors” - what works perfectly against one hero will be useless against another. Thus, developers add new variables to the familiar Quake formula. The game is definitely not worth classifying as a MOBA.

Quake Champions Facts

Quake Champions is being developed for PC only. The developers understand that this is exactly the platform on which e-sports shooters are primarily of interest. So forget about gamepads, Quake Champions is created exclusively for mouse and keyboard users.

All things considered, it's logical to expect Quake Champions to be a free-to-play game. The developers do not yet have an answer to this question. They are still thinking about the business model and promise to give a final answer later. Will the game be paid? LawBreakers or will open servers to anyone like Team Fortress 2 - we will find out in the future.

However, Quake Champions is an exclusively multiplayer project, in which there will be no place for a single player campaign. If you like a story campaign, then it is better for you to pay attention to Doom, where a lot of attention is paid to its development.

If you thought that Quake Champions was being developed by id Software, you were wrong. The St. Petersburg studio Saber Interactive is responsible for the game, which was noted for its successful remake
At the moment, the following weapons have been confirmed: shotgun, lightning gun, machine gun, rail gun, gauntlet, nail gun and, of course, machine gun. The developers are hiding the fact whether BFG will appear in the game.

Waiting for Quake Champions

At the moment, the developers of Quake Champions still have a lot to show and conduct a number of beta tests so that they can conclude whether the game has a chance to effectively perform in the e-sports shooter genre. However, the trend towards the revival of shooters from the 90s cannot but rejoice.

Beta testing and final release of Quake Champions are planned for 2017.
