  • Game process

All players take turns clockwise. Each turn consists of five phases:

  • Recovery phase. Everything that was in effect during your turn, effects, traps, and so on, returns to its original state. All locations, except for which your hero is currently located, become new for him again.
  • Atrocity Phase. You become the master of the dungeon and you have a chance to spoil the life of your opponents. To do this, you need risk tokens from your opponents. You must play the risk card and pay with tokens only to the players, not your own. However, risk tokens from different players cannot be used on the same card.
  • Location Phase. Take the location card and place it on the table where possible. If there are no location cards, you skip a turn.
  • Labor phase. In this phase, you perform any of the following actions: explore (you are allowed to draw location cards and place them on the table, and you spend 1 point on each location card), move (one point is spent to move the hero to another location), play glory cards (you can play glory cards from your hand to gain benefits) or complete a quest (the cards show all the conditions, restrictions, and everything you need to successfully complete the quest). Any completed tasks are deleted.
  • The discard and draw phase. If you have cards in your hand, you must discard one card from your hand or one card from your inventory. If there are no cards in your hand, then you don't have to discard any cards. If you did not move and did not choose an “action”, you will receive one glory and risk token. Draw adventure cards to 5. The player's turn is over.

The player executes five phrases at once on his turn and, upon completion, passes the move to the next one.

    The gameplay is simple: the hero descends into a randomly generated dungeon (it is made up of cards), fights monsters, searches for treasures, completes various quests and grows in levels. And at the same time, every turn the player takes on the role of the local dark lord - the lord of the dungeon. Such a split personality is implemented quite elegantly. Each hero has two types of resources - glory and risk. Fame is used to pay for useful cards, while opponents spend risk by playing cards of attacking monsters and other harmful cards against the hero. As a result, each player has time to speak for both sides, which pleasantly diversifies the gameplay and creates tension - you never know who will deal the next blow against you. There are a lot of possibilities - from inciting a monster or setting a trap to moving the hero along with a piece of the dungeon to another part of the map.

    Most of the actions in the game are based on a standard skill check: a die is rolled, the rolled number is added to the value of the ability being checked, and if the final result is not less than necessary, success. Therefore, you will have to roll the die here often. Checks are used when completing quests, when dodging numerous traps and, of course, in battles. The latter, despite the use of all the same banal checks, turned out to be exciting and unpredictable thanks to several forms of combat and a lot of opportunities to influence the result with the help of a well-played card. By the way, each card has an artistic text that allows you to feel the game world well - and just smile. The game is generally made with humor. What is worth, for example, a card that allows you to discard an attacking monster - it shows a hero pointing the embarrassed monster to the door. It's so simple.

    What is nice, quests are not limited to the destruction of monsters. The game has seven types of tasks, thanks to which it does not get bored for a long time. And for those who are still tired, seven more Dungeons sets have been released in English, and the game mechanics provide for full compatibility of all sets. True, all references to this compatibility were removed from the Russian-language edition; however, until other Dungeons sets have been released in Russian, this does not make much sense. But the publisher added a single version of the game for those who like to play role-playing solitaire games.

    In general, the localization is very different from the original. The English-language edition was distinguished by a fair amount of asceticism. There was nothing in the box besides cards and a black-and-white sheet of rules, so the first quest for beginners in the Dungeon was to search for chips, tokens, dice, and also scissors. The domestic publisher added all the necessary props, made high-quality hero chips (in the original they were cut from one of the cards), and also reworked the structure of the rules. True, this slightly increased the cost and size of the box. But you have to pay for convenience.

    Outcome: a very successful, albeit difficult to master, transfer of the ideas of classic dungeon crawlers to a card format. But be careful - the game is intended strictly for connoisseurs of the old school. However, it will be easier to introduce newcomers to it than to force them to play the ancient game “without graphics”.
