Wind Seekers

He who seeks the wind will find the storm.

That night Luke was unlucky. I had to take over someone else’s shift, and without really getting enough sleep. Shivering from the morning cool, the guard tapped his feet and warmed his chilled fingers in his sleeves. Every time his thoughts returned to the grandiose drinking party that was to be held in the fifth barracks in honor of the Feast of the Name. The main part of the garrison intended to start early in the morning, and here he is doing nonsense!

“Burn your toad,” muttered the soldier and sniffed his reddened nose.

If the commandant is afraid of non-existent enemies, why didn’t he order the gates to be closed? In recent years, the huge forty-yard doors have stood wide open even at night, and not a single rat has dared to slip through them. Why strengthen the guards if it is much easier to lower the bars.

Damn stupid captain! Damn sergeant! Damn fate, burst your toad!

Muttering curses under his breath, Bow walked along the wall from the Tower of Ice to the Tower of Fire. On the way, he nodded to his friends drinking hot shaf, heard another joke addressed to him, weakly fought back and quickly walked away before he was reminded of his duty. Luk didn’t like giving money away too much.

The Gate of Six Towers, the greatest fortress in the world, created by the Sculptor himself, blocked the only pass through the western part of the Boxwood Mountains. The legendary citadel has withstood more than one assault over its thousand-year history, but has never been taken. Nabator's army broke its teeth on the gray stones and lost many soldiers. It will take something stronger than steel and courage to force a fortress to surrender.

As long as the Gate exists, the soft “underbelly” of the Empire is reliably protected.

Onion saw two women emerge from the Rain Tower onto the wall. Walking and Ogonyok. The magicians were talking about something, and the guard, not daring to interrupt their conversation, stopped. He turned to the loophole, looking at the surroundings.

He was born in a small steppe village and even now, six years after he saw the snow-capped peaks, he never tired of being amazed at the beauty of the mountain peaks. The gate, built between two ridges, blocked the entrance to the valley, from where the road into the interior of the country began.

In years past, many caravans went south. Weapons, silks, carpets, spices, horses and hundreds of other goods were transported through the Gates from distant lands. But the golden times are over, the road is empty. Only local shepherds and scouts, whom the commandant sent out every now and then to the neighboring gorges, dared to walk along the old highway and climb into the inhospitable mountains.

Although something strange has been happening with intelligence recently. Already the second detachment of northerners was delayed. But according to all the deadlines, he should have returned long ago. The commander was furious, taking his anger out on the captains, and they, respectively, on the sergeants and ordinary soldiers.

The guard, unlike the officers, was secretly glad that the dozen in which the red-haired Ga-nor served were still walking around the neighborhood. Onion owes the northerner money. But he's not very good with coins. Last time I blew too many dice. Almost all of my monthly salary was spent on paying off debts, damn you! Now there is only one sol left in the wallet - this is not the money that Ga-nor will agree to accept, but he will have to give it back, the northerners are straightforward people, if something goes wrong, it will be straight in the teeth.

The soldier leaned out into the loophole and spat with relish. I followed the spitting with hope, dreaming of hitting some unwary oaf, but, to Luka’s great disappointment, no one was visible under the wall. He swore for the hundredth time that morning and returned to contemplating his surroundings.

In front of the Gate lies a small town. The low houses were made of round stones and clay taken from the banks of a nearby mountain river. The settlement was home to families of shepherds, wool traders and silver seekers. People were not at all afraid that they lived on the border itself. The fortress is impregnable, the soldiers are experienced. No mountain tribes will come here. They have already been punched in the nose more than once and know that the Gate cannot be taken. It is faster to gnaw a passage under the mountains than to bring down the mighty walls of an impregnable citadel.

The air, despite early summer, smelled of light frost. The sun's rays painted pink the snowy peaks of the mountains shrouded in haze. The luminary slowly rose from behind the eastern ridges. Another minka, and the snow on the peaks shone so brightly that Onion closed his eyes and again remembered the toad.

When the guard opened his eyes, he saw that two skinny mules appeared on the empty morning road, pulling an old wagon. From such a height, it was no more than a palm, but Onion never complained of poor eyesight and clearly saw that a woman was sitting on the box.

Dressed almost in rags. It looks like a real scarecrow. The warrior frowned in confusion. Did any of the settlers decide to head to Yelnichy Ford? It is fifteen leagues away. Bringing wool to a fair held in honor of the Name Day is stupid. For successful trading, one had to leave the bunks six earlier. Now it’s just in vain to chase animals. If you are in time, it will be by the very closing of trade.

Strange van. Unfamiliar. And this woman... Like a beggar...

Onion, frowning, tried to remember who in the town had two such emaciated mules and a cart with a blue top to boot? A search of familiar names and nicknames yielded nothing. If the guard's memory did not fail him, he had never seen such junk on anyone. During his service, he had the opportunity to stand at the Doors more than once, and the soldier knew everyone who went to Yelnichy Ford on business.

It's one of two things. Firstly, you never know who drove into the town while he was off duty? Secondly, an unfamiliar van could have dragged itself from over the pass. And therefore, from Nabator itself.

The strange cart had about two hundred yards to go to the Gate when Bow called out to a friend who was chatting with two other guards:

- Hey, Rek!

- What do you want?! – he responded dissatisfied.

Rek grumbled dissatisfied, but still turned in the indicated direction. He looked at the road with indifference for a few moments, and then turned his gaze to Luke:

- Do you know this one?

- So I don’t. Is it from the pass?

Hearing about the pass, the rest of the soldiers leaned out into the loopholes.

“I should tell the captain...” Rek said hesitantly.

“So tell me yourself,” muttered Luk. But then he still recommended:

– Shout down to check what’s there and how.

Rek turned away from the loophole, putting his hands to his mouth, and barked in a loud voice to the guards standing in the outer fortress courtyard. At that very moment, the captain appeared from the barracks with twenty unfortunates doomed to take up service on the holiday.

Meanwhile, two guards came out of the wall and slowly walked towards the van. A dozen more, mostly curious, stood at the Doors. The woman pulled the reins and answered something to the soldier’s question. Onion would give a lot to hear exactly what it is. A moment later, he saw eight people jump out of the van. Six turned out to be dressed in armor and decently armed. The sight of two more froze the blood in his veins and gave him an unpleasant tingling sensation in his stomach. They wore white robes!

Necromancers of Sdis!

The guard wanted to shout, to attract the attention of the Walker, but his voice disappeared from fear. With wide eyes, he watched as warriors in the colors of the Nabator kingdom killed the startled soldiers and ran to the citadel.

A fight broke out below.

Something cracked, howled, hissed, and the captain and his men were scattered in bloody pieces across the fortress yard. The staff of one of the Sdis sorcerers emitted a gray glow.

It rumbled again, this time much louder than before, and the necromancer and the Nabatorian closest to him were left with a wet spot. The Walker called upon the Gift, and Ogonyok stood nearby, pressing her palms to the Mistress’s back.

- Gate! Close the Gate, burst your toad! - roared the come-to-mind Onion.

He saw several hundred horsemen galloping at full speed from the direction of the town towards the fortress. Next to the Nabatorians, not lagging behind the horses a single step, ran thin creatures that looked like black skeletons.

Rek found himself at a huge horn and, taking air into his lungs, blew. A low roar echoed across the towers, signaling the alarm and rousing the garrison to their feet. People who understood nothing were running from everywhere. Many were unarmed.

The gates finally trembled and began to slowly close.

Too slow.

The battle was raging under the wall. Six Nabatorian warriors, with the support of the surviving sorcerer, could hold out until the arrival of the main forces. The grate being lowered rumbled, then another. Immediately there was a roar, and a warning cry was heard throughout the fortress yard that “the sorcerer burned the bars.”
