One takes you to sunny California in 1969, and the other takes you to a Victorian horror mansion. But both push on a difficult plot, talk about a creative block and plunge into pure madness.

Recently, indie projects have rained down on us like from a cornucopia, which are difficult to describe with any one definition, but it is intuitively clear that they have a common idea and presentation. We are talking about, recent and, as well as many similar games, which are ironically called "walking simulators". But besides this, they have another important property: they were all originally made with a claim to the role of a work of art.

All these games are similar to some extent, but Layers of Fear and Californium even become somehow awkward - they have so much in common. Therefore, it will be easier and more interesting to consider them together, and not separately.

california

Californium from the French Darjeeling and Nova Production immediately attracted a lot of attention. The main reason for this interest is that the game is dedicated to the science fiction writer Philip Dick and the schizoid worlds that he created. Here, Philip's alter ego, like himself, falls into a painful creative crisis and, against the backdrop of a passion for psychedelics, is most naturally damaged by the mind.

The most interesting thing about Californium is exactly how the descent into insanity is shown. The main character, Alvin Green, is in a rented apartment in California in 1967. He is trying to write a book and suddenly finds out that his wife is leaving for good. They lost their daughter two years earlier, and since then Alvin has had a hard time: he has writer's block, and his addiction to drugstore drugs and cheap alcohol is clearly not good.

Alvin Green is slowly losing his mind. First, a certain ironic voice begins to address him, as if in, and then an inevitable collapse is approaching. The writer sees mysterious signs scattered here and there, and then realizes that if they are used, one can literally break through space and time and see an alternative reality.

Windows through which other worlds shine through are not a bad find, but Green's madness goes much further. Having discovered all the secret signs and as many holes in space as possible, he wakes up in a new dimension and is already looking for signs in it again, the field of which again breaks into another reality. Etc.

It turns out that the main character simultaneously suffers from agoraphobia, schizophrenia and paranoia, and this determines what other worlds will be like. The California of the 60s from our reality is filled with hippies, bright sunshine and rock and roll. Another, totalitarian California, is filled with twilight light, FBI agents and wiretapping devices. Here Alvin Green is not just a writer, but a patriotic writer celebrating the charms of the regime. And he must testify against his wife so that she is sent to the electric chair.

Alvin finds the signs here too, allowing him to escape reality again. This time in a cozy futuristic city under a dome. But even there there are holes in other dimensions. Will the system close in the end and will the hero go crazy - that's the main intrigue of Californium.

Well, the main problem with a game with such a smart idea is an incredibly stupid idea for gameplay; the player must find secret signs and activate them. The problem is that the signs are not given so simply and you can only see them from a certain point. It seems to be not so bad, but by the 3rd chapter, such a pastime begins to annoy. Some of the signs generally appear for a while or only if you stand with your back to them, which makes them seem like a mockery.

Layers of Fear

Layers of Fear is a non-classical horror game in classic settings. The action takes place in a Victorian mansion on a stormy night, which is not very original. But the story and presentation deserve attention: the main character, once a famous artist, returns to his comfortable home and understands: something is wrong here; everything is not the same as before - different and frightening.

You are required to wander around the house, study it and try to understand what exactly happened here. In other words, a concept similar to Gone Home. But what is not in the latter is the heartbreaking and constantly progressing madness of the protagonist.

And here we return to Californium again, because the main character of Layers of Fear is an artist living in a protracted creative crisis. And what's more: he lost his wife and child, and it's not hard to guess that he, too, began to go crazy. The madness builds gradually and starts with little things, like mouse rustling or strange streaks on the windows.

At some point, the hero ceases to recognize his own house, many rooms appear from somewhere, but the paintings are most maddening. Painting is the protagonist's passion, and his torment from the inability to finish the work of his whole life is no less than from the loss of his family. Portraits, landscapes, and still lifes hang throughout the mansion, and changing them is one of the game's most eerie experiences.

Layers of Fear is most reminiscent of the stories of Edgar Allan Poe and the trailer of the game does not capture its spirit very well. In fact, it is not so much swift and scary as viscous and restless. Outbursts of horror are followed by a thoughtful study of the changed and “broken” reality.

What is the result? "Walking simulators" gained momentum and became a trend in indie games. Once upon a time, many rushed to make pixel art or survival, now it's the turn of long walks with minimal gameplay, but powerful stories. Layers of Fear and Californium are not the worst representatives of the genre, they try to take a good plot and atmosphere, but they are ridiculously similar in their ideas.

Congratulations to all lovers of horror, necromorphs, dark corridors with intense grinding and dead space. In today's review, we will talk about the game, which greatly strains your nerves and makes you always be on the alert. Meet our guest today... Dead Space 2 is a Survival Horror video game from the American studio Visceral Games and published by Electronic Arts on January 25, 2011 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Your attention is a game that was born to put the HALO series on the shoulder blades. Before the release of Killzone: Shadow Fall, she clearly did not succeed in this, and it is not a fact that after the release she lived up to expectations. Let's see.
Briefly about the plot, that is, there are two factions: the hilgast are like Nazis in gas masks and vektans are brave Americans in shining armored suits.

In the intently yellow scale, we are presented with the world after the fall of the asteroid, where chaos and devastation reign in the best traditions of Mad Max. Self-proclaimed rule imposes establishes world order, and renegades, mutants and opposition groups rage in modest provinces.
The drama of this situation becomes an attempt to smear the hero from head to toe with something indecent, as soon as he has time to take the first steps.

There was such a world Pandora, where savages lived. It was created unusual, cynical and a little empty. Adventurers ran in it, some treasures and killed hundreds of bandits and animals, then they died, revived, and again killed hundreds of monsters, pumping and collecting dropped things - in a word, poured Diablo, only in the form of a first-person shooter.

It so happened that the sequel to the famous Left 4 Dead, originally developed, did not cause great joy among the supporters of the main multiplayer shooter of the past years. The biggest opponents of the second part even created a thematic group on Steam, in which they urged the community not to buy an early sequel. But the developers did not listen to the capricious public, promised completely new sensations, a ton of content, slammed the door and concentrated on development.

Metro has a powerful credibility with the Russian-speaking player, which rests on two pillars - post-apocalyptic romance, which is especially appreciated in our area, and the second factor is the feeling of an unusual atmosphere with bright droplets of the Slavic soul. And now Metro last light receives wonderful reviews and ratings from Western publications, but in fact there is still something to discuss. After the events that took place in...

After sitting in a wheelchair for 14 years, our hero saw firsthand the atrocities of the Nazis against medical personnel and decided to put an end to their reign. It was this event that made the brave Captain Bloszkowicz challenge the Nazi regime in an alternate world where the Nazis won World War II.
The new Wolfenstein: The New Order is an absolutely serious game, as evidenced by the almost complete absence of jokes and banter against the Nazis.

It’s always unpleasant for supporters of the original when the wrong people take on the continuation, perhaps that’s why BioShock 2 was NOT dug only by the lazy for lack of novelty, so it’s doubly pleasant that BioShock Infinite fell into the hands of the creators of the original. So, meet our hero - this is Booker David, a private detective with a dark past. His path lies in Colombia - a giant flying city, where Elizabeth was abducted.
