The artist Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov stood at the origins of the new, Soviet art of painting. His brush belongs to many official, "ceremonial" and informal, "everyday" portraits of the leaders of the first persons of the state, including Lenin and Stalin, representatives of the Bolshevik, communist intelligentsia. He also captured the most important events in the life of the country - the launch of the metro station, the round date of the celebration of the October Revolution. A multiple laureate awarded with medals and orders, including the Honored Art Worker, the First President of the Academy of Arts, Alexander Mikhailovich, at the same time, did not consider these works to be the main ones in his work. His most expensive brainchild was a small canvas, very simple in plot, which, however, reflected the true soul of the great Artist, the Master.

"Wet terrace"

This is Gerasimov's painting "After the Rain", the second name of which is "Wet Terrace". It is known to every schoolchild of which generation has already been, is included in the school curriculum as a manual for teaching essay writing. Reproductions from the canvas are included in Russian language textbooks for grades 6-7 (different editions). The very same painting by Gerasimov "After the Rain" is in one of the exhibitions.

In Soviet painting, especially in the first half of the 20th century, there are very few works of this type, like Gerasimov's painting "After the Rain". Let's fast forward to the distant year 1935. What is happening at this time in the USSR? Firstly, the 7th Congress of Soviets, significant with important state decisions. A congress of collective farmer shock workers, at which the working peasantry reports to the government about their loyalty to the chosen course. The movement of multi-station weavers begins. The first line of the Moscow metro is being launched. Being in the thick of things, Gerasimov responds to them with bright, original creativity. By 1935, he was promoted to the forefront of the best masters of socialist painting. However, the artist more and more clearly feels a kind of emotional breakdown, fatigue and a desire to abandon everything and go home, to the distant provincial town of Kozlov, in the Tambov region - to rest.

It shines dazzlingly, as if carefully polished and varnished. The strongest summer downpour has just ended. Nature has not yet had time to come to its senses, everything is alarmed and disheveled, and the last drops are still no, no, and they break with a resounding thud on the wooden floorboards. Dark brown, with standing puddles, they reflect every object like a mirror. The shining sun leaves its warm golden reflections on the floor.

Than Gerasimova "After the rain"? It is difficult to describe the canvas in parts, fragments. It makes a tremendous impression on the viewer as a whole. Every detail of Gerasimov's work is significant and harmonious. Here is a railing and a bench. Closer to the inner part of the veranda, they are darker, as this part of the terrace is less illuminated. But where the still rare sun falls, there are more and more golden reflections, and the very color of the tree is of warm, yellow-brown shades.

To the left of the viewer, on the terrace, there is a table on graceful carved legs. The curly tabletop, which is dark in itself, seems completely black because the wood is wet. Like everything around, it sparkles like a mirror, reflecting both an inverted glass and a jug with a bouquet, and the sky brightening more and more after a thunderstorm. Why did the artist need this piece of furniture? It organically fits into the surrounding environment, without it the terrace would be empty, creating the impression of uninhabited, uncomfortable. The table brings into the picture a hint of a friendly family, hospitable tea parties, a joyful, cordial atmosphere. A glass glass, turned upside down by a whirlwind and miraculously did not fall, speaks of how strong the wind and downpour were. Disheveled flowers in a bouquet, scattered petals hint about this. White, red and pink roses look especially touching and defenseless. But we can imagine how sweet and tender they smell now, washed by the rain. This jug and the roses in it look unusually poetic.

And outside the terrace, the garden is noisy and raging. Rain drops roll down from wet foliage in large beads. It is clean, dark green, bright, fresh, which you get only after a refreshing shower. Looking at the picture, you begin to very clearly feel the intoxicating smell of wet greenery and the earth heated by the sun, flowers from the garden and something else very dear, close, dear, for which we love nature. The roof of the shed is visible behind the trees, in the openings of the branches there is a whitening sky brightening after a thunderstorm. We feel lightness, enlightenment, joy of being, admiring the wonderful work of Gerasimov. And we learn to be attentive to nature, to love it, to notice its amazing beauty.

The dim rays of the sun are falling on the lush trees. The sky is gray, but it is already starting to brighten, like windows washed after a long winter. A dim light falls on the roof of the barn, which can be seen through the foliage at the back of the garden. She sparkles like silver, so much adorned her with the rain and the rays of the sun, which hardly break through the clouds.

Gerasimov's painting "After the Rain" made a very strong impression on me. Despite the fact that the weather, when the author wrote the picture, has not yet completely improved, it is all filled with light, bright brilliance, and the amazing purity of nature washed by summer rain. The artist himself was so delighted with the beauty of the refreshed nature that opened up to him that he wrote this beautiful work literally in one breath, without modifications and corrections.

By 1935, having painted many portraits of V.I. Lenin, I.V. Stalin and other Soviet leaders, A.M. Gerasimov was promoted to the greatest masters of socialist realism. Tired of the struggle for official recognition and success, he went to rest in his native and beloved city of Kozlov. This is where the Wet Terrace was created.

The artist's sister recalled how the painting was painted. Her brother was literally shocked by the sight of their garden after one unusually heavy rain. “Nature was fragrant with freshness. The water lay in a whole layer on the foliage, on the floor of the gazebo, on the bench and sparkled, creating an extraordinary picturesque accord. And further, behind the trees, the sky cleared and turned white.

Mitya, rather a palette! - Alexander shouted to his assistant Dmitry Rodionovich Panin. The painting, which my brother called "Wet Terrace", emerged with lightning speed - it was painted in three hours. Our modest garden pavilion with a corner of the garden received a poetic expression under the brush of his brother. "

At the same time, the picture, which arose spontaneously, was not written by chance. The picturesque motive of nature, refreshed by rain, attracted the artist even during the years of study at the School of Painting. He was good at wet objects, roofs, roads, grass. Alexander Gerasimov, perhaps without realizing himself, walked towards this picture for many years and latently wanted to see with our own eyes what we now see on the canvas. Otherwise, he could simply ignore the rain-drenched terrace.

There is no straining in the picture, there are no rewritten pieces and no invented plot. It really is written in one breath, as fresh as the breath of green foliage washed in the rain. The image captivates with its spontaneity, the lightness of the artist's feelings is visible in it.

The artistic effect of the painting was largely determined by the high painting technique built on reflexes. “The luscious reflections of the garden greens lay on the terrace, pinkish and blue on the wet surface of the table. The shadows are colorful, even multicolored. The reflections on the boards covered with moisture are cast in silver. The artist used glazes, applying new layers of paint over the dried layer - translucent and transparent, like varnish. On the contrary, some details, such as garden flowers, are painted pasty, emphasized with textured strokes. A major, upbeat note is brought into the picture by contour, the reception of lighting from behind, point-blank, the crowns of trees that are somewhat remotely reminiscent of flickering stained-glass windows "(Kuptsov I. In Russian painting of the Soviet period, there are few works where the state of nature would be conveyed so expressively. I believe that this is the best picture of A.M. Gerasimov. The artist lived a long life, wrote many canvases on various subjects, for which he received many awards and prizes, but at the end of the journey, looking back at what he had passed, he considered this particular work to be the most significant.

The author of the painting, the description of which is presented here, is Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov (1881-1963). He is considered one of the outstanding Soviet artists. He was the First President of the USSR Academy of Arts (1947-1957), Academician of the USSR Academy of Arts. In 1943 he was awarded the honorary title of People's Artist of the USSR. He became a Laureate of four Stalin Prizes. He painted many paintings that are considered to be true masterpieces of Russian painting today. His works are in such major museums as the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum. One of the artist's works that deserves special attention is the painting "After the Rain".

By the time the painting was created, Alexander Gerasimov was already considered one of the brightest representatives of socialist realism. According to her, Alexander Mikhailovich was shocked by the sight of their gazebo and garden after a heavy rain. Water was literally everywhere, it sparkled "creating an extraordinary picturesque accord", and nature was fragrant with freshness. The artist simply could not pass by such a spectacle, and created a picture that subsequently amazed all lovers and connoisseurs of painting.

Having conceived to paint this picture, Alexander shouted to his assistant: "Mitya, rather a palette!" As a result, the painting was completed in three hours. The work, which was written in one breath, literally breathes freshness, pleases the eye with its naturalness and simplicity. Many of us have repeatedly seen something like this after the rain, but behind the mass of deeds and thoughts, they often simply did not pay attention to how beautiful the renewed nature is after an ordinary rain. Looking at the painting of this artist, you understand how much beauty is in such an ordinary phenomenon, which the talented painter conveyed with the help of a quick sketch of a small corner of the gazebo and the garden that surrounds it.

The sun, which breaks through the clouds, makes the puddles on the terrace boards truly enchanting. They shine and shimmer in different shades. On the table we can see a vase of flowers, a glass that was overturned by a downpour or wind, which even more creates the feeling of the past bad weather, petals stuck to the table. The trees of the garden are visible in the background. The branches of the trees caved in from the moisture that had accumulated on the leaves. Part of the house or outbuilding can be seen behind the trees. Due to the fact that A.M. Gerasimov created the picture very quickly, in one breath, being amazed and inspired by the unexpected transformation of nature, in the picture he was able to capture not only the appearance of the environment after the rain, but also his feelings and emotions from the beauty he saw.

What could be more beautiful on a summer day than the freshness that the rain brought. She hovers in the special smell of the air, in clearly traced pictures of the surrounding nature, in the incredibly joyful trills of birds. Gerasimov A.M. clearly loved these moments, which give greater completeness to a person's feelings, expanding their range. "After the Rain" is a painting that allows you to plunge into the memories of the joys of summer days at any time of the year. What kind of dreams does the canvas give birth to? What are the aspirations?

The strikingly bright talent of the artist managed to convey the time that each of the people loves. After all, it has some kind of elusive charm of its own, it awakens deeply in the soul of a person both joy and sadness. Flared up emotions help to look at life in a new way and see even more good in it.

The painting shows a terrace with simple furniture and a wooden floor. In the background you can see a garden with some buildings. All this is well washed by the rain, therefore it is decorated with even brighter colors with rich shades, shimmers and sparkles thanks to the newly appeared sunlight. The picture is so positive that it is impossible to immediately look away or think about something other than the mood that it conveyed. A.M. Gerasimov managed, in my opinion, to convey both the mood and the details so precisely that the viewer could feel the holiday of a summer day with him. It's nice to think that someone has cut flowers that smell like this from the fresh air and put them in a clear glass jar. Now the raindrops, and the gentle wind ruffled them. And delicate petals are scattered across the table. This adds a certain romantic note to the picture, brings fresh colors to its description. My imagination immediately finishes what happened before the rain, and what will happen, as soon as the final touch on the finished painting is done.

I suppose that the people in the garden and on the terrace were having fun until large drops predicted rain for them, and then they ran into the house with loud laughter and jokes. They began to look through the windows to see if the water flows would end. And the rain kept pouring and pouring. But in an instant, the drops began to fall quieter, less often, finer. The rain has stopped! There was a revival in the house, everyone started talking about future plans. And only the unchanging romantic saw the perfect picture that would be worth capturing. He rushed for brushes and paints. Over time, the others also understood his intentions, calmed down and began to watch with pleasure, almost breathlessly, the skillful movements of the great artist's brush. No one expected this day to end with a masterpiece!
